For what its worth, the head computer salesman at Best Buy in Pittsburgh said that the WDC drives were selling the best. Noticed they also had Quantum and Maxtor.

Is this one ready to roll yet? Haven't been following lately but interested if they have sorted out their problems.

Regards

Neil

Western Digital Kicks Off Expanded
Web-Based Customer Support Program, Extends Service Options With
Online Return Feature
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 1998--
WD only hard drive company to offer online return request/status,
online troubleshooting
Western Digital Corp. (NYSE:WDC) Monday announced that it
has expanded its Web-based customer support program with the
implementation of its online RMA feature.
With the expanded program, Western Digital (WD) plans to extend
customer service and support with online options 24 hours a day, 7
days a week for quick and easy answers to general questions about hard
drives, return policies, installation, upgrades, PC compatibility,
troubleshooting and other commonly asked questions.
WD's Web-based customer support program adds the ability to
request an RMA (return materials authorization) from WD technical
support without making a single phone call. Consumers merely request
the RMA online, and the RMA number and other pertinent information is
e-mailed back to them. An RMA status report is also available to
consumers online to determine when the hard drive will be shipped,
method of shipment, tracking number, etc. To access this new feature,
visit westerndigital.com.
"Our Web-based customer support program is all about making
support easier for our customers to obtain," said Ed Inal, vice
president of customer support for Western Digital. "WD has received
the Channel Champions' award from Computer Reseller News magazine for
six years running, with our technical support group picking up high
scores in their category area. It is important to us to continue to
improve our services. WD was the first company to move to the
implementation of a 3-year warranty and we always strive for service
improvement -- online support is the next logical step in that
process."
Western Digital is the only one of the top three hard drive
manufacturers to provide its customers with Saturday support -- a peak
time for consumer hard drive installation. Western Digital is the only
company to provide online troubleshooting for desktop hard drives,
leading customers through various procedures related to problem
solving for installation, compatibility, software and other related
topics. WD is also the sole company to maintain a message board,
providing customers with quick access to questions and hard drive
issues.
"Western Digital began as an electronics company, and has a
wealth of expertise in that area," said Inal. "As such WD is the only
company to provide and develop its own diagnostic software, which is
easily accessible to our customers. WD DIAG, for example, diagnoses
and repairs the most common hard drive problems."
Western Digital Corp. is a leader in information storage products
and services. The company designs and manufactures hard drives for
personal and enterprise-wide computing, and markets them to leading
systems manufacturers and selected resellers under the Western Digital
brand name. Western Digital is the first Fortune 500, multinational
company to have been awarded company-wide ISO 9001 registration,
linking all WD organizations with a consistent global standard for
quality processes. The company was founded in 1970 and has long been
noted for its storage and end-market systems-level design knowledge.
