Q* thread,

Interesting news:
______

TOKYO, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Japan Telecom Co Nissan Motor Co and AirTouch Communications Inc plan to form a joint venture in Japan to offer W-CDMA next-generation cellular phone services, Japan Telecom said on Friday.
W-CDMA (wide-band code division multiple access) service allows users to send multimedia information such as graphics and motion pictures through cellular phones.

A Japan Telecom spokeswoman declined to provide further details.

Japan Telecom currently offers phone services with the other two firms through different joint ventures.

Japan plans to launch the advanced service in 2001, and the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry said earlier that it planned to issue three licences for nationwide operations in 1999.

Japan's leading international carrier, Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co has said it would also seek a licence.
