OT

Almost one day and your cease-fire seems to hold. You should try a stint at the UN.

Alper

PS : If this thing of yours can hold, I would recommend trying to get back Peter Portlas, who has taken a vow not to post here anymore. PP has provided valuable information with his unbiased comments and technical analysis, not to mention his unique style.

To ALL.ÿ CONGRATULATIONS!!ÿ Words can't describe my feelings about the new spirit on the Thread.ÿ Credit for the amazing change goes to every single one of us.
ÿ
My sense is that the situation was ripe. The negative emotion on the thread had reached such an intense peak that everyone was (literally) sick of it, and WANTED it to stop.
ÿ
The old atmosphere was evoking the worst from ALL of us, yet --ÿ when challengedÿ -- we managed to achieve what Alper aptly called a Cease Fire. In the new calm atmosphere, we have a CHANCE to be our better selves.ÿ
ÿ
My intuition is that a powerful, destructive storm was blowing, then (for more than a day) there was a windless calmÿ ---and now the wind is beginning to blow in the other direction.
----------------------------------------------ÿ
ÿ
Based on the response so far, I think there actually is HOPE
ÿ --- that Peace might break out on the Breakout Thread!ÿ a real peace . . .ÿ
ÿ
Are we making some kind of Internet history?ÿ ---ÿ and without any technological aids, like V-chips or ignore buttons!ÿÿ Just simple, old-fashioned human integrity.ÿ And a commitment to the philosophy: "People are not for hurting."
----------------------------------------------ÿ
ÿ
Because of your unanimous positive response,

I'm EXTENDING the CHALLENGEÿ --ÿÿ for ONE WEEK
ÿ -- from now until NEXT Sunday August 30th at Midnight. ÿ

PLEASE RE-READ the terms of our Cease Fire.
For convenience, I'll put a copy in the Clubhouse.ÿ

Note that, IMO, Item #4 WILL BE THE HARDEST TO ACHIEVE-- will require the most self discipline and integrity.ÿ But the KEY to our success is that each person takes responsibility ONLY for his own impact on the challenge. (Of course, that is strictly my own opinion.ÿ And please excuse my use of the non-inclusive pronoun. I've yet to get the complete hang of that stuff!)
-------------------------ÿ

Because of our diverse population, personalities, and viewpointsÿ -- and the charged atmosphere of gambling (er investing)ÿ --ÿ there will surely be irritations and slip-ups.ÿ We ARE human, after all. <Gggg>.ÿ In the new calm atmosphere, I hope we can all try to be patient, and cut each other lots of slack.

Now here's the tough one:

I think it's important to acknowledge at this point that, in the heat of the war, really hurtful personal attacks were made.ÿ Though people put up a crusty front, the feelings of many were deeply hurt.ÿÿ The wounded include Henry Niman, Tony, Bob Barry, Steve (Fugazi), Mudcat, Bernie McDermott, Nancy Hammond, Wallace Rivers, Andrew, and myself.ÿ

Andrew, I had mixed feelings at the time, and still regret, the barb I launched at you. I chose a poor way to deal with a problem, and I'm sorry that you were hurt.

But it's over, it's done.ÿ Please let's not waste any energy on guilt/blaming/resentment.ÿ Let's instead spend that energy practicing healthier, respectful,ÿ MORE EFFECTIVE communication techniques to deal with controversy.ÿ

THANKS again to ALL of you.
Pardon my rambling.ÿ
(Off soapbox)

Well, our CEASE FIRE is in TROUBLE --ÿ after just one week, almost to the hour.ÿ One sparkÿ ---ÿ then POOOF, a brushfire.

I only read a few posts, and must leave here shortly, but saw enough to know that a mine or two got tripped. We NEVER had a truce you know, only a cease fire, and we've been walking through a mine field, searching for a peaceful solution to MONTHS of turmoil.

Can we see now?ÿÿÿ what a HARD task we have?ÿ if we are to preserve and extend the cease fire, and (eventually - LONG down the road) attain a TRUCE?ÿÿÿ

Last week we cooled off a bit, but many of us retained well-stoked hurts and angerÿ -- accumulated over months of hurling and taking barbs, insults, ....
Old grudges take lots of time to heal..ÿ We all need equivalent patience. Some, who are more patient, can make up for those of us with shorter fuses.

This is NOT Kid Stuff.ÿ To work, mediation processes require a lot of maturityÿ -- you gotta stuff that ego out of the way! Not easy!! And those who have felt most hurt during the past battles WILL be slowest to be able to cooperate with the process.

SO CUT SLACK!!
---------------------

Is it HOPELESS???ÿÿÿÿ NO WAY!
Can we deal with this, and work things through?ÿ YOU BET!ÿ --- IF enough people WANT peace enough to work hard at it,ÿ and not be HOOKED by those who want to sabotage it.ÿ
ÿ
(I haven't had time to read much of today's posting, but did notice that some folks came back to CELEBRATE the breakdown, and toss fuel into the fire.ÿ Is this what we want?ÿ knee-jerk bickering? )
-----------------ÿ

I've GOT to leave pronto - have no more time for this right now, but will be back late tonight.ÿ
In the meantime, PLEASE ....... if you care about the people here

CUT SLACK

Be Response-Able ONLY for yourself.

PLEASE go back and re-read the 4 terms and comments
ÿ--- and RE-THINK themÿÿ -- in the LIGHT of this situation.

and decideÿ - what do I really want to do . . .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember: It IS Do-able

Expect the bestÿ (but be preparedÿ for the worst)

The corollary to that:
If I expect nothing, nothing is what I will surely get

Hang in there folks,
Cheryl

OT -ÿ TO ALL:ÿ - Well, OUR CEASE FIRE HELD ---and I feel much better about it than last week, because after that Thursday brush fire we managed to keep picking our way through the mine field, profiting from our mistakes. So, in retrospect, I'm glad the brushfire happened.
ÿ
I stick to this: <<Credit for the amazing change [and responsibility for it to continue] goes to every single one of us.>>
I decline any other interpretation.ÿ (I figure the Thursday Brushfire and Recovery validate my point.)ÿ
ÿ
Out West here, three hours behind, I was so worried that I burned candle-time Thursday night to write a "Thursday Brush Fire Report" / analysis.ÿ But by the time I got to SI the next morning, you guys had everything under control, and didn't need my report.ÿ So you were spared. <G>
ÿ
Now I am trying to assess:
o Where are we?
o What's happened?
o Has anything really changed?ÿ (Feedback indicates that many sincerely think not.)
o Where do we go from here?
ÿ
ÿ
From my own perspective:
The thing that bothered me most about the thread seems to have changed.

ÿ
Late at night on August 20th when I yelled STOP!
I felt engulfed in a foul-tempered environment whereÿ
--- not only (people hurled at each other any flak we could find
-------------- and tolerated such actions (though hating them) )ÿ
--- but also we EXPECTED such behavior, TOOK FOR GRANTED that it would go on and on and even increase.
ÿ
It felt awful.ÿ It felt hopeless. ('I'll just leave, and never come back!')
It felt like a Rod Serling Twilight Zone skit of an image of Hell.
I did NOT plan to yell STOP!ÿ No one was more surprised than me.
And no one is more surprised than me at how this thing is unfolding.
ÿ
At this point in time, it seems (to me), the tension has been raised from a subconscious level to a conscious level, where people can (and are) making choices about what they want to say, and are doing something about it.
ÿ
So I'm satisfied, and would like to continue.

Furthermore, during this horrific downturn in the Market and Ligand's share priceÿ -- and unbelievable buying opportunityÿ(for people with any money left) --ÿ I would hate to think what the mood and din would be like in the old environment.ÿ

And looking just now at the great conversation going on at "LGND Breakout" this incredible Market morning (it's still morning here), I'm sticking my neck out againÿ (please excuse the corn) to make it EXPLICIT:
----------------------------------------------

Because of your positive response,

I'm EXTENDING the CHALLENGEÿ --ÿÿ for THREE WEEKS
ÿ -- from now until Sunday SEPTEMBER 19th at Midnight.ÿÿ

PLEASE RE-READ the terms of our Cease Fire.
For convenience, there's a copy in the Clubhouse.ÿ

Note that, IMO, Item #4 IS STILL THE HARDEST TO ACHIEVE

(#4 says to avoid judgmental commenting on the goof-ups of others, and
ÿÿ --- works to keep any disagreement from spreading to additional participants
ÿÿ --- gives people a little space, keeps us from backing them into corners,
ÿÿ --- slows us from "attributing motivation" every time we sense a slight ....
ÿÿ --- helps us keep the conversation on investing/Ligand)

Obviously, there are rare times when #4 should be over-riddenÿ - which people did (carefully, a couple times) to good effect last week.
---------------------------------

THANKS again to ALL of you.
Please pardon my rambling again.ÿ
