Tom - Yes, internet commerce is a tidal wave, but AMZN is a leaf on the front of the wave. The explosive growth in e-commerce will occur because it allows for the elimination of the middlemen . AMZN is currently moving along quickly, but they are not even in a position to actually profit from the growth in e-commerce, since it is middlemen like themselves who will be swamped and crushed by the wave. Their only hope is that they can prevent the internet from carrying out its ruthless rationalizing of the marketplace. They will not be able to do that, no matter how many shopbots they control or set up alliances with: the internet will be free, anarchic, and inexorable. The fact that the "Kleiner-Perkins keiretsu of 200 technology companies" makes AMZN dangerous for bears is another matter. These companies can prop each other up by "buying" and "selling" to each other, creating the illusion of healthy demand for their "products" far beyond true market demand, postponing any danger of reality setting in. I must say I am worried - saddened? - that intelligent longs such as yourself and William do not see the difference between the forces behind the inevitable growth of e-commerce and the forces that are keeping illusions like AMZN and YHOO pumped full of hot air. I truly had not considered that smart people would not be able to see through these gimmick stocks. OTOH, you seem to have edited the reference to the Kleiner-Perkins keiretsu from your post. Perhaps you decided it was not wise to mention them in a post that appears to be an innocent identification of AMZN with real e-commerce, rather than vulture capital monstrosities. Please restore my faith in humanity an admit that you are stringing us bears along, and do not really believe that AMZN has a future in e-commerce. It's hard enough losing money to the THING without losing my sanity too. e.b.
