The production has dropped because there is not enough demand, inventories went up. Demand growth slowed, whereas according to the New Era theory it should've picked up. Plus, some US produced goods for domestic consumption were replaced by foreign, made in Asia, while foreign demand, particularly in Canada and LatAm - most important for US - dropped like a rock. Doing anything with US rates is not going to do any good tradewise.
