Dell Computer Starts Direct Sales in Still-Growing China Market

Shanghai, Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp. began direct sales in China, one of the last places in recession- plagued Asia where personal computer sales continue to rise.

Kevin Rollins, Dell's vice chairman, said the company expects its sales in China to grow at double the annual 20 to 30 percent rate forecast by the industry for the country.

During the first half of 1998,PC shipments in China rose 28 percent from a year earlier, the second most lively market in Asia after India, said analyst International Data Corp. (IDC). For all of Asia excluding Japan, shipments fell 5 percent


''We see Asia Pacific, and China, as being a new engine of growth,'' Rollins said.

IDC forecasts 4.06 million PCs will be sold in China this year, compared with the government's estimate of three million.

Dell said its main sales target will be existing customers with operations in China, followed by Chinese companies, government institutions and experienced individualcomputer users......<continued>
