LF, Market makers and specialists have some control if nothing is happening, but almost none if there is a big order or news. And, since they don't know when a big order will come in or when news will break ("when news breaks, we fix it"-The Daily Show on Comedy Central), they have to be happy with minor moves or risk being obliterated. Also, we have to remember that this is not a club of buddies. Many of these people hate each others' slimy guts and would like nothing better than to stick somebody they used to work for or somebody who stuck them on a previous trade. Still, even enemies can get together to rip off the individual investor. That is sort of like the cavalry shooting buffalo out of train windows. They didn't want the meat or the hides. They just wanted to keep from being bored until they reached the fort where they got a chance to shoot Apaches.
