First of big deals expected this month

Aug 21, 1998 - Korea's big five conglomerates will sign letters of intent to swap subsidiaries in two or three industries by the end of August, industry sources said Aug. 20.

Initial swaps will include electronics and petrochemicals, and a second stage of big deals to begin by Sept. 10 will include the auto industry. Automobile big deals will depend largely on the outcome of the auction of Kia Motors, the sources said.

The big five -- Hyundai, Samsung, Daewoo, LG and SK groups -- have agreed in principle to execute swaps in two or three sectors each month starting in September, according to the sources.
