I recall a book that was something like Build Your Own Siege Engine. Even better was the one on how to build a catapult out of stuff from the hardware store. Guaranteed to hurl a car engine 50 yards.

I don't know how useful that would be, unless you have a whole lot of junk in your yard and some neighbors who won't crank the stereo down. My friends did have a catapult that hurled water balloons. This thing was tremendous fun. Damned balloons hurt, though, if you they hit you. Someone's 10 yr old son didn't believe it, and tried to catch one. It hit him on the shoulder and knocked him clean off his feet. Awesome.
