DVD Going the Way of CD-ROM and VHS in 1998
Now that Hollywood's top studios have started releasing films on the DVD format en masse, DVD-Video's day may finally come. The third edition of InfoTech's DVD Assessment cites unprecedented title availability and falling hardware prices as contributing factors in the surge of DVD-Video players sold this year. The study further projects sales surpassing 1.2 million units in 1998 alone--up 140 percent from 1997--and forecasts DVD-ROM drive sales of more than 6.5 million now that many of the compatibility and performance problems hampering the launch of DVD-ROM have been resolved.
