Spring, 1967--my roommate Rin and I daringly set out, clad in our pleated skirts and kneesocks, and our white oxford cloth shirts, to buy our first pair of bellbottoms. We were still forbidden to wear slacks to class or on dates, they were only allowed in the dorms. But Gracie Slick was singing about White Rabbits and strange smelling cigarettes were being passed as we sat around candles in dark rooms listening to Inna Gada da Vida. The Times They Were Achangin'.

Mine were blue with white daisies all over them (I couldn't quite let go of cute yet). Rin's were solid blue. What a stir we caused back in the dorm. And you wonder where Rambi comes from? HA! Rin was May Queen our Senior Year (1970) and I was on her Court and WE BROKE TRADITION AND WORE PANTSUITS for the Coronation. The Richmond paper even did a story on us, we were such rebels. I'm convinced that it's up to the older generation to make safe boundaries for the next to break through without killing themselves. We thought we were so shocking and bad. I even went braless a couple of times.
