High Tech Commentary-- Scan List
August 24, 1998

Only 11 stocks made the list over the weekend which bring to light 3 very important pieces of information.

1. Stocks go in and out of rotation in my universe and there is no need to force a trade or force a set of stocks. IF they are not there, they are not there and maybe sitting and watching is the best you can do. OR - you look at the rest of the list for some special circumstances for a daytrade.
2. As I have mentioned most of last week, the Tech sector was going to be mugged real bad as we got into the Options Expiry Friday Bloodletting. It did take place and the smart money either shorted, dumped their long positions, or went to the side and just watched the chaos. More importantly, they do not appear of this list today since there is a great deal of uncertainty. So the best thing to do and to watch.
3. No one can day in and day out deliver you winners or directions for investments for that day. I will not write about timely short term stocks during uncertain time for the sake of writing about something and having something for you to jump into.

With that said, the tech sector was beaten up badly on Friday creating some very attractive prices for some stocks. The key concerns here are whether we are about to see lower lows before turning around and whether the long term investor in each of us is willing to step up to the plate and not get concerned about hitting the absolute bottom of the price range before making the move into some of these stocks. The list of the most beaten down beauties are:

AMAT($30.50) ASMLF($24.375) ATMI($15.00) CFMT($7.50)
CIEM($31.25) CYMI($15.375) DPMI($30.25) IDTI($5.93)
IPEC($9.125) MCHP($26.00) NSM($11.25) NVLS($34.00)
PAIR($12.875) PLAB($17.00) TER($21.25) VTSS($32.50)

As long as we are listing beaten down stocks, I would think that CIEN was way over sold in the hysterics of losing the T proposed contract. AT&T Corp. (T) said it had stopped its evaluation of Ciena's equipment. Ciena Corp. plunged 25-17/32 to 31-1/4 causing the company to postpone a shareholder vote on its merger with Tellabs Inc. (TLAB).
The Red Herring Online (August 21, 1998) printed that Ciena announced AT&T (T) dropped it from consideration for a major contract. Apparently AT&T said it won't consider Ciena's dense wavelength division multiplexing gear which would increase the capacity of fiber-optic networks. The Ciena contract was worth $100 million for the gear. contract to provide the gear. AT&T is testing equipment from Lucent Technologies (LU). This makes the second major setback this year for CIEN since WorldCom dropped them earlier this year. Sprint has even mentioned they are considering bringing onboard another vendor this year. A majority of CIEN's business was based on Sprint, WorldCom, and the telephone companies like ATT.

True, CIEN is a one trick pony these days, but I think we are seeing about 10-15% overkill on this stock.

RST SCAN LIST COMMENTARY

AEIS(11-1/8, +5/8) -Chart does not look good. Company is laying off people and consolidating their buildings and operations. Their major customers are falling on extremely hard times (NVLS, AMAT, LRCX, etal.). The last 3 months has seen this company fall from $15 to under $9, with the last 5 trading days showing an upward trend through $11. There was a definite over reaction to their financials and their recent announcements and the oversold condition may have been compensated for to bring AEIS back to realistic valuations. IN its heyday, we saw this stock in the $30s and I am confident we will see those numbers again when the industry recovers.

MUEI(16-1/4, +9/16)-We have spoken about this in past reports and it seems as if they are adding to a positive trend upwards on the tails of the wonderful DELL numbers along with new marketing and, of course, the takeover spectre.

ORCL(24-15/16, +3/8)-This stock is desperately trying to break the $30 barrier once again. There is no reason it should not but the market environment always seems to work against them. I have been waiting for months and months for this sick puppy to finally get well. Oracle Corp upgraded by Sunlogic Securities (8/21/98 - citing strong client base, strong international database management software sales and growing revenues.
Oracle to Acquire Versatility Inc.http://biz.yahoo.com/snp/980821/vers_m_a_1.html

WIND(38-3/8, +3 9/16)-I don't remember if I spoke on this stock before and will assume that I did not.. Wind River Systems Inc. jumped 10 percent Friday after the software company posted earnings that surpassed Wall Street's expectations.

CS First Boston issued a STRONG BUY on this stock before the market opened on Aug 21st. The stock opened up 5/8 higher but actually fell into negative territory (-7/16) before making the run up to close up over 3-1/2.
TOP25: Computer Software & Services Firms CBS MarketWatch - Alerts - August 21, 1998 15:23 listed WIND as #25.
Words of Caution though are necessary given the 8/21/98 SEC filing to sell over 200,000 shares of stock by insiders. marketwatch.newsalert.com

AAPL(43, +2-3/8)-people just love those iMacs, even with the discovered flaws. AAPL has made a great comeback this year and looks to have turned things around.
news.com

GALTF(11-15/16, +3/16)-See previous commentary for a more in depth report. However, CS first Boston initiated coverage on Friday with a buy recommendation.

NAUT(23-15/16, +1/8)-only reason it is mentioned here is related to the TNFI appearing on the list a few times in the past few trading sessions. Winter outwear season is getting real close so between the big guys like NAUT, TNFN, COLM, etc. we might be seeing the beginning of the seasonal run for this guys.

COMS(30-7/8, -1/2)-Cisco and 3Com are battling it out for the consumer market it seems. CSCO has its eye on this market while 3Com starts a branding effort. The link to the following story is well worth reading.
cbs.marketwatch.com

MPRS(5-13/16, 0)-just waiting for the ink to be placed on the papers for their acquisition by Hasbro Toys.

XIRC(26-9/16, -1/2)-gave back some of its gains over the past few weeks but not enough to scare me away from the long positions in this stock. Stock actually got down as low as $25.625 before coming back to close with a respectable -1/2. This makes up for the unusually high pop a few days ago. things seem to work out on the average.

NOVL(11, +1/8)--releasing new software written for the corporate network. Novell released better-than-expected third-quarter numbers on Friday. We spoke of this stock before and those people on The Motley Fool have posed the question:
Is Novell's Turnaround Turning? fnews.yahoo.com

TIDBITS I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE:

Autodesk Inc (ADSK) fell 5-3/16 to 27-7/16 after they announced it was buying Discreet Logic Inc. (DSLGF) for $531 million in stock.

INTC- Merrill Lynch analyst Tom Kurlak cut his rating on the company's stock to long-term "neutral" from long-term "accumulate."

Vitesse Semi(VTSS)- coverage initiated by CS First Boston as STRONG BUY. I am glad they agree with me since I thought is worthy enough to discuss with this subscriber base. CS first Boston also agrees with me as to why this is such an important stock to consider.

DELL-remember, this stock spilts in a few weeks and could repeat the past by going up after the split. Six splits in six years, need we say more.

Urban Report Ranks Seven Stocks as Immediate Buys

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 24, 1998--In a copyrighted article for www.stockwire.com, the Michael Urban Report has published its opinion with regard to 18 stocks. Seven of the stocks were ranked in the report as ''immediate buys.'' The Urban Report maintains that the stock market remains in a bullish trend and any further weakness should be viewed as a buying opportunity. Worthy of note are: Rainforest Cafe (NASDAQ:RAIN - news), Spyglass (SPYG), Sun Microsystems (SUNW), Tava Technologies (TAVA),

Both CYBG and REXI were crushed today and worth watching for any signs of recovery on the prospects of a slight bounce up. Much like CIEN today, both these stocks could have been oversold.

August 25, 1998 Commentary

14 stocks made the short list today with only a few poised for some short term opportunities. Most are wait and see or longer term prospects.

CNTO(39-7/16, +1 11/16)-CNBC released word of a new drug that was approved by US regulators for Crohn's disease. biz.yahoo.com NEW YORK, Aug 24 (Reuters) Centocor Inc.'s (CNTO) new drug for treating Crohn's disease, Remicade, could become the company's most profitable if it is later approved for other inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and asthma, its CEO said Monday. biz.yahoo.com

Monday August 24, 9:19 am Eastern Time-Company Press Release-NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 24, 1998--In a copyrighted article for www.stockwire.com, the Michael Urban Report has published its opinion with regard to 18 stocks. SPYG is mentioned in this report.

WIND(40-3/8, +2)-stock still performing well from this past Friday's release of earnings that exceeded expectations. Good analyst coverage and comments were probably taken to heart over the weekend causing some investors to flock to a stock that seems to be out performing its peers and other stocks, in general. See previous commentaries. Volume was more than 2.5X average daily volume.

ADTN(28-11/16, +2 3/16)-I cannot seem to find anything on this stock that would suggest this type of move. This makes me very suspicious. Last news worthy of noting goes back 10 or more days. Stock is traded just under 2X average volume and looks as if the chart has it coming out of a bottom. Over the past 6 trading sessions, 3 of them seem to have been at uncharacteristically higher than ordinary volume. Pause for wonder, I guess. I follow this stock because of my heightened interest in their competitor, PAIR which seems to be depressed in value and possibly undervalued.

MUEI(16- 5/8, +3/8)-Micron announced the launch of their ad campaign the first week of September. We mentioned this a few days ago and it seems we are building this up to a crescendo. It seems to be working since there is heightened interest in this stock in anticipation of this campaign along with other prospects previously mentioned over the past few weeks. We are even seeing a plethora of news releases concerning the impending launch.

NOVL(11-7/16, +7/16)-trading at 1.3X average daily volume and trading on the Motley Fool Turnaround Commentary highlighted yesterday, NOVL has now been noticed by C/Net News.com Business reporter Dawn Kawanto who published an online article, "Novell primed for growth, rebound" today.
In spite of a declining Nasdaq, NOVL is getting closer to its 52 week high and has already demonstrated cost cutting measures in its recent quarterly report. news.com

MAST(25-1/2, +3/4)-appears on the list but with no news or volume alerts. Looks as if the stock, after falling from just under $30 to $21 in the last 2 months, it has slowly recovered some of that loss over the past 2.5 weeks to its present midway point of $25.50 today.

THDO(3-3/4, +1/8) Interactive gaming software company being watched along with AKLM for possible seasonal upturn as we get into the Holiday buying season and for any possible additional "marriages" like that of MPRS and Hasbro Toys. You are only as good as your last title or as attractive as a suitor perceives you.

AKLM(7, +1/16)-traded very low volume today (30% of average daily volume) and hardly worth talking about. See previous reports or just re-read the comments above for THDO.

MCRL(36-3/8, +7/8)-one of two IC manufacturers on today's report. Looking for signs of life in this sector with a company that is trying to move out of a recent bottom from the end of July to very early August. MCRL appeared on these scans before and is up 20% from the beginning of August. As a memory refresher we linked you to a July 30, 1998 story "Micrel Announces World's First Quad USB Switch". Micrel Semiconductor's is involved in analog power management ICs but announced the expansion of its USB Power Distribution Switch product line.

LSCC(31-1/2, +1 1/8)-Remarkably it is up on half of its average daily volume. This company sports a very respectable P/E ratio and some solid earnings. The semiconductor downturn has not been very nice to this company, having fallen from $74.50 less than a year ago. It has been a steady decline over the past year with a bottom established early June when it gapped down from $35 to under $30. This gap was made up steadily in mid July before finding a comfortable home at the $30 level. Some of the recent positive action could be due to the 8/18 Goldman Sachs coverage of this stock as a market performer. LSCC (Lattice Semiconductor Corporation) designs, develops and markets the widest range of high-performance ISP programmable logic devices (PLDs), invented by LSCC in 1992.

SMOD(20-7/8, +1/4)-Trading 1.5X average volume, SMOD seems to be a darling these past few days on the heels of its pretty impressive earnings release a few days ago. Still riding the wave it seems. I was not too impressed with this company when I first started commenting on it. I still feel queasy about it but the numbers don't lie. Amid all the Class Action Lawsuits that proliferate the news stories on the internet, there was a decent headline and news release today. SMART Modular Technologies, Inc. and Ericsson Sign Licensing Agreement For GSM Technology
biz.yahoo.com

CUBE(15-11/16, +5/16)-C-Cube Microsystems closed up on news that they partnered with Divicom and Pioneer Electronic Corp. CUBE stated the alliance would improve their ability to meet growing digital-cable demand in the US. The alliance will create an end-to-end digital system, compliant with Open Cable standards, providing home banking, online shopping and interactive television applications. biz.yahoo.com

CYMI(15-11/16, +5/16)-the best was saved for last. This supplier of DUV (Deep Ultraviolet) supplies/sources for the lithographic exposure tool market (steppers and step-scan systems) dominates their market and is one of the top enabling technology suppliers for the advanced 0.18u device technology. Other than a nice mention in the Infrastructure report by Carl Johnson, there are no news stories or releases to indicate something is brewing. However, I believe this to be a very under valued stock and a stock that has not been given the recognition it deserves. I think that more and more analysts will stumble across this stock and realize they are the only consistent and field proven game in town for DUV technology. Owning a vast majority of the market, the may see limited competition from Komatsu in Japan but the market is big enough for both to be successful. This, of course, is predicated on the implementation of 0.18u manufacturing technology within the industry. To date, only INTC has really stepped up to the bar.
