an Alpha version of Linux is either out now or shortly will be.

I am confused. I thought Linux (Red Hat version, et al) has been out for some time. I bought a copy (but have not had time to play). The most popular thing I hear of is Linux running Apache for web hosting. Both are public domain open source code.

Linux has been running on Alpha for several years and apparently it is extremely fast and very stable. If you want support on Linux you can actually buy it with support, from Redhat I believe, and unlike other OS's it should even come with source code if they're pushing it as Linux. The way I've heard it Linux for Alpha was developed with a lot of assistance from Digital Equipment software engineers (on their own time).

If anyone's interested go to www.alphapowered.com for info on companies that are/were building Alpha boxes. Most if not all will sell their box with Linux. The really unfortunate thing (I believe someone mentioned it here or posted a link to a news item) is that apparently Compaq is neglecting the alliance with the AlphaPowered group and some are suffering or dropping Alpha.
