Meeting injured vets can sometimes reduce romantic youthful illusions about war. My friend's dad walked with a cane, from some wound he got in the Pacific. We thought that was kind of cool, but we were just stupid kids. In my teens I met one poor guy who had been burned over most of his body in some sort of ordinance explosion. That wasn't cool at all.
