Options expirations day tends to make the price land where the options writers make the most money. Given this stocks precipitous drop as of late, my guess would be that the stock would have to move up to eliminate as many gains on Puts as possible. I'm sure that noone buying Calls has made any money in quite a while.

As for today's volatile stock options. There are individuals who specialize in trading options on options expirations day. The more volatile they make it, the more gamblers they hook in, the more money they make.
