I still question whether people would adopt Alpha when they know Intel will be pushing an alternative even if they have to wait an extra year or so.

I agree. I think people secretly think: "It's possible for CPQ to drop Alpha because it is only one part of their business. If it is not profitable it would be very bad business to drag it along. On the other hand, it is impossible for Intel to drop it because it is their core business. I better stick with Intel."

I wait for someone like rude dog to convince us with the numbers.

Your view of the computer market is very limited. If Merced becomes a reality, it will be in under $1000 computers within 3 years.

It's only been four years since the 486 was obsoleted and now you couldn't buy one to save your soul--not even in a garage door opener.
