How on earth did you determine that Microsoft follows any kind of "unified standard". Most people will agree that they do whatever suits Microsoft, not what the rest of the software community is doing. Microsoft is completely anti-standard! I can name numerous examples for you. The fact that they did not implement CORBA seems the most absurd to me. Why couldn't Microsoft simply have implemented CORBA? You can talk to the whole world with CORBA. Instead they want their own standard so that you get roped into Microsoft products again.

Well, no doubt they did that to further isolate themselves from UNIX. That's good for Microsoft; bad for consumers.
