Pace uses a lot of SGS chips for settops. The newer boxes may have C-Cube's chips, but we don't know.

Rapid Growth Seen For DVD Market In Next Five Years
Joseph F. Kovar

Irvine, Calif. -- The PC DVD drive market is expected to grow rapidly over the next five years.

DVD drive shipments should exceed CD drive shipments sometime in 2001, depending on how aggressive vendors are in bringing DVD-ROM drives to within $10 of CD-ROM drives, said Mary Bourdon, principal analyst for computers and peripherals at Dataquest, San Jose, Calif. "Royalties for DVD-ROM drives are expensive," she said. "The wild card is will vendors go for the throat and drop royalties."

Right now there is a $40 to $50 difference between the prices of DVD-ROM and CD-ROM drives. As long as that difference exists, CD-ROM drives will continue to ship, said Bourdon.

Tiernan takes five
Tiernan Communications has introduced five new products for MPEG-2 digital TV applications. The Tiernan TE6 MPEG-2 encoder is designed for applications requiring compression to the 4:2:2 Studio Profile @ Main Level and 4:2:0 Main Profile @ Main Level according to the MPEG-2 standard. It provides quality images at up to 50 Mbps and multiplexes compressed video, audio and data channels into a single DVB compliant transport stream.
The Tiernan TDR600 MPEG2/DVB integrated receiver/decoder is for broadcast grade applications requiring MPEG-2, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 and provides both digital and analogue output of video and audio signals. The Tiernan TDR77, MPEG-2/DVB Integrated Receiver Decoder is a mid-range product suited to 4:2:0 broadcast and professional applications requiring only analogue video and audio outputs, with support for teletext and user data services.
The TUI10 Universal Network interface converts any RS-422, ASI, G.703 (E2, E3 and DS3) input and provides an output signal in any of the supported input formats, making it suitable for the connection of two MPEG-2 devices that do not use the same physical interface. The Tiernan TMOD1000 is a QPSK/DVB modular option for Tiernan encoders that provides a compact 2U encoder/modulator.

SeaChange Cluster
SeaChange International's Broadcast MediaCluster is the firm's latest video server designed for play-to-air applications. The system combines MediaCluster architecture with MPEG-2 4:2:2 video compatibility and interfaces to tape archive systems, officials said. In addition SeaChange software provides an interface across the cluster for automation system control.
It currently supports the Louth Video Disk Protocol and OmniBus Systems' broadcast network operation system. Future implementations will support additional third-party protocols and provide native application programming interfaces access, officials added. The Broadcast MediaCluster can scale from a single server to multi-node clusters with dozens of inputs and outputs, terabytes of storage and interfaces to tape library archives.
