>> it looks like LU is trying to Microsoft their way to the top (without all the negative publicity) <<

It's a fact of life in the business world. Cisco did the exact same thing with competitors like Ascend. Cisco was behind in remote access and offered steep price concessions to muscle market share. Microsoft's business tactics are well documented. There are stories of Intel threatening to NOT sell their chips to customers if they didn't get their way! Coke was accused of trying to muscle out Pepsi, when it came to big relationships with companies like McDonalds.

Lucent is doing the same thing to Ciena, and I think that's why CIEN felt like they had to sell out to TLAB in the first place.

It's no wonder the market likes to bid up huge behemoths like Microsoft, Cisco, Lucent, etc. They use their financial strength and market leadership to muscle out smaller more innovative start-ups.

Now I don't want you to think that I am some kind of bleeding heart liberal who thinks that we should bust up all the big players and make the playing field more level. I think being smaller has it's advantages as well and savvy start-ups can outfox their larger brethren if they play their cards right. A little bit of luck never hurts either.
