j b, re Thank you for the history lesson

The Constitution is a living document which IS THE highest law of the land. Even the Supreme Court is a child of the Constitution, because it's creation and existence is authorized by the Constitution.

Oh yes, let's go back to the federalist papers. Boy I wish more people would. They would see how the original intent of the founding fathers is being blatantly run roughshod over today by our modern day Supreme Court, particularly in areas such as State-sanctioned religious activities.

re The blessings of liberty refers to individual rights and property ownership rights.

Clearly the founding fathers, in the Declaration of Independence, believed that we were "endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these being life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

So clearly the "Blessings of Liberty" include those inalienable rights. I know that the Federal govt is restricted by the Constitution to those things specifically prescribed to it, with all else being in the power of the several States. But clearly "promoting the general Welfare and securing the Blessings of Liberty", not to mention "insuring domestic Tranquility" are items which leave the Federal Government with broad powers when it comes to the "Happiness" of the people.

Have we reached a day where the Federal Govt can provide for little Johnny and Susi's breakfast at school, but can't tell Johnny and Susi that breaking a promise made to your spouse is a bad idea. May God have mercy on our wretched souls.
