Growing Net Access to Fuel E-Commerce

The value of electronic commerce, the number of transactions and an
explosion in the number of Web surfers will be fueled by an almost 700
percent increase in the number of ways to access the Internet, according
to research from International Data Corporation (the research arm of PC
World's parent company International Data Group.)

IDC forecasts the number of people accessing the World Wide Web will hit
almost 100 million by year-end 1998 and 320 million by 2002. In 1997,
the number of devices used to access the World Wide Web--such as
Net-enabled TVs, personal digital assistants, and screen phones--was
78.1 million; by 2002, the number of Web devices will increase to more
than 515 million.

This will bring substantial growth in the value of goods and services
sold on the Web, the Framingham, Massachusetts researchers said. The
percent of users buying goods and services on the Web will grow from 26
percent in December 1997 to 40 percent in December 2002. The actual
number of Web buyers will expand from 18 million in 1997 to more than
128 million in 2002. IDC predicts the amount of commerce conducted over
the Web will reach more than $400 billion by 2002, reflecting a 1997 to
2002 compound annual growth rate of 103 percent.

T minus one week to "important [SoftQuad/HoTMetaL] product annoucements"

...highly illogical captain?...one SoftQuad business unit [HoTMetaL] has strategically moved its formal release(s) of its pending 'important product announcements' from August 13th to September 1st citing August is essentially the worst month to announce anything (as an industry given) other than bad news [so why did he say August 13th in the first place?]...(note: and the business unit on the shortest-leash of SWEBFs shareholder value critical path pursuant to a formally stated divestiture which simply makes no sense to delay] so why is another (SWEBF/SKI) business unit [ONLINE merchant] making formal announcements (with Stumpworld) throughout said worst public relations month of the year [August]?...what is THAT all about?...white man speak with forked-tongue or no bandwidth...or?...
