Harold:

<<Well, there has been talk in this thread about NOVL and MSFT meeting privately. I heard MSFT is having major problems with Active Directory and might want to license NDS from Novell.

Is this a total rumor, or is there some truth to it?

If it is true, I see two potential scenarios: 1) NOVL's NDS becomes a part of NT 5.0 and after a few years MSFT makes sure that anyone using NDS under NT has no backward compatibility to NetWare or other NOVL
products - just like MSFT did with Java or 2) NOVL does it right and makes twice the money as they could alone. >>

Schmidt and Gate met in Washington, DC according to one of the rags last month, but the details of their meetings is anybody's guess. Its possible that it may involve the NDS for NT product Novell is releasing this winter. I think Novell will do it right for this product, as well as NDS for NT 5.0, when NT 5.0 comes out down the road. Would be interesting though to find out where Active Directory is going. I'm sure we'll know within the next 3-6 months.

Regards,

QuadK

There is no evidence that Microsoft has slowed down either its development of Active Directory, or its marketing of Active Directory to its major accounts. While NDS is clearly better than Active Directory, and out sooner, Microsoft's traditional method is to push their own solution come hell or high water. Unless someone can point to a change in this methodology, I have to conclude that Microsoft is not currently planning on licensing NDS or buying Novell. Microsoft is "locked in" to NT 5.0 and Active Directory.
