I ran into this problem before, where windows would not let me keep my dial up password saved. The box was light grey and no way to click it off.

The solution I found was to:

Bring up the controll panel, then double click on "Network". Click on "ADD" and select "CLIENT" from that menu. Then click add again, on the menu on the left hand side click on "Microsoft" it will bring up a list on the right hand side. Select "CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS" then click okay. and close the other boxes. You computer should prompt you for some Windows disks and then re-boot.

That solved my problems when I was running win95 and couldn't save my password. Usually had this problem when I re-installed windows and didn't select Client for Micorsoft Networks
