I agree.

I didn't mean to give the impression that Windows 95/98 is going away. But every machine sold by Penguin Computing, VM Research, and Corel Computing is a machine that would have installed Windows 98. Not significant numbers right now.

MSFT will dominate the desktop for another decade. Will the desktop PC even be relevant in 10 years? Time will tell.

You're right, the real story IS the inroads Linux, JAVA and JINI will make on the server market, the internet and embedded systems.

My only point is that MSFT is vulnerable on many fronts. Their failures have been glossed over. And as the Linux user base grows ... the number of applications will grow exponentially even for the Linux desktop.

I'm told WABI runs well on Solaris and if it runs well on Linux ... you can run your Microsoft Office Applications on Linux. Even I'm not ready to give up Excel.

Like I say, Bill Gates has doubled the value of my property in Washington. I love Microsoft Excel. I have nothing against Microsoft if they are obeying the law and not bullying OEM's and ISP's.

Many people are simply not aware that there are much faster, cheaper and better operating systems available. I get way too excited when I use my Linux "machine". Sorry about that.

Best of luck.
