>Another thing I noticed today was that the PowerMac G3 desktop and mini-tower inventory at this particular CompUSA has dropped significantly.<

Confirmed.

Tekserve has a dwindling supply of 233/32/4Gw/ATI RAGE II desktops @ $1400 that are perfect for upgrading low-end users with legacy peripherals. Add 64 mb.

[I think I saw the 233 discounted to $1299 at CompUSA for a *nano-second* before they realized the demand the iMac shortage would cause and put the price back up to $1399.]

For higher end purchasers, the 300/64/6G/Zip(or DVD!) w/ATI RAGE Pro desktops @ $2000 is an almost better deal. Add 128mb and 4MB SVRAM to run larger monitors.

For first-time buyers, the iMac w/ bundled monitor, software and modem continues to be a no-brainer. We expect a delivery of Epson USB 700 (740?) 4 color printers this week at $299.

Given a 3-5+ year lifespan, I suggest anyone buying get at least a 64 mb chip upgrade. Also consider a 128mb if you intend to use Virtual PC or try your hand at graphics. This is a one-slot machine and it makes sense to be aggressive. Otherwise you have to throw out the old chip to expand further.

Extending the AppleCare to three years (while still under the original one year warranty) for less than $150 is not a bad deal at all.

Note: I don't expect any significant problems with in this machine, they appear to be quite well made. The only warranty work we had so far was a single machine with a faulty video cable. Still, integrating the subsystems -- monitor, modem, logic board, RAM, CD, HD, KB, mouse -- increases the statistical likelihood that service will be needed on some part of the whole.

See, I'm an iMac specialist too!

Too bad, Tekserve doesn't compensate by commission. :)

Another thing I noticed today was that the PowerMac G3 desktop and mini-tower inventory at this particular CompUSA has dropped significantly. A couple months ago this CompUSA used to have 12 or more G3 DT/MTs stored under the display shelves at any given time with a few more units in stored in the back. Today I saw just 3.

I visited my local CompUSA yesterday as well (Bellevue, WA, next town south of Redmond and east of Seattle). I noticed exactly the same thing about all the G3s, desktop, minitower and PowerBook. There were no PB 250 or 292Mhz units to be had, and two shelves where minitower G3s once resided were bare. Only one G3 desktop unit, a 233Mhz, was on the shelf. I didn't ask to check stock numbers of any of these units though.

I spoke with a salesman about the iMac (they were out) and he said they got 35 units last weekend at the launch, and they sold as fast as he could pull them off the shelves and slide them to the door. All units went to backorders. They got 24 more units in this past Wednesday and again sold all of them to backorders. Another gentleman in the order department said they were expecting at least 12 more units in by Wednesday, and only 7 were allocated to backorders, but I expect they will all be spoken for by the time they arrive.

This was also the first time I've seen the iMac in person, and everything people have already said is true. This baby is beautiful, and pictures just don't do it justice! If you haven't seen one in person yet, I highly recommend it.

On the downside, the iMac mouse is very small and hard to use, and the keyboard will be problematic for some as well. Great opportunity for third party iMac USB input devices here.

Eric,

>>So it does seem that these reports all seem to indicate that the Pro line sales is quite strong this quarter.<<

Yeah, I think Pros have learned to wait a couple of months after a new model is released until the inevitable price drop. My girlfriend just bought a 300MT because of the price drop.
