NTL: NTL announce set top box deal with ACER ----------- Dots: c-cube.com c-cube.com ; ----------- 08/24/98 M2 PRESSWIRE (c) Copyright 1998 M2 Communications, Ltd. All Rights Reserved NTL, the UK's leading integrated communications company, has announced a deal with ACER that will see the Taiwan based company supply NTL with an initial order of 30,000 TV-Internet set top boxes (STBs). The software for the set top boxes will be provided by Oracle owned NCI. This first delivery of STBs will form part of a revolutionary Internet and telephony package that NTL is launching to consumers later this year. Telephony and Internet access will be available throughout the UK from late Summer for both PC users and for households with televisions. Even without owning a PC homeowners will benefit from unlimited World Wide Web, email access and discounted telephony rates. Digital television will also form an integrated part of the package from 1999. Barclay Knapp, Chief Executive Officer of NTL Incorporated, says these services are a major step towards bringing the new era of digital communications into everyone's homes: "Only 25% of homes currently own a PC -- even fewer have modems --and so the vast majority of the population is excluded from using the Internet and email. We are in the unique position of having a compelling package that consists of a national telecoms infrastructure, an award-winning Internet service and expertise in digital TV. This combination allows us to deliver all the necessary elements for voice, data and television delivery direct to the living room." Blake Barker, Managing Director of NTL Internet said: "We are delighted to announce this deal with ACER as it represents a real milestone in our TV-Internet development. We are now moving swiftly towards launch and we expect our Internet package to revolutionise the way people use television."
