Christine,

I actually have a cousin who is a real live derivatives-trading yuppie, and you couldn't ask to meet a nicer guy. While there probably are a few live versions of the yuppie caricature out there, most yuppies, as individuals, are probably perfectly decent, pleasant, people. But when you get a bunch of them together, the tides can move in some pretty odd directions.

We have more than our share of self-proclaimed yuppies in the Philippines, most in Manila (a place I avoid), many of them well over 40 and still proclaiming. Most come from wealthy families. Most wealthy families here trace their wealth either to land the Spaniards stole from the natives or to the corruption of more recent years. Very few rose to their current state by competing in the economy, and most do all they can, inside the law and out, to stifle competition. The trickle-down factor, as you can imagine, is negligible. If I spend more than a few days in a row in that city, I start turning into a leftie. There are places in the world where a revolution could honestly do a lot of good.

I'm not sure how I got there from your question. It's a petty scattered morning.

Steve
