To all - regarding ... Meanwhile Russia is an insignificant sized economy -- I heard someone say (on CNBC or MSNBC, I think) that the real story with Russia is that it is "too nuclear to fail."

I agree with you except for one thing. We'll see 9500 (or thereabouts, anyway) way before this time next year. We'll also bounce up and down a bunch of times. Sideways oscillating market with a slight upward tilt for the market in general. But stocks whose earnings really do grow strongly will go up accordingly. While most of the S&P have only slow growth, and hence the averages have only slow growth as well.

Pstt, Mike, it's 'John', not Jon. Your dyxlexia is showing. Just kidding I hope you realize - in case you can't tell, few, including Dougjn and even infrequently Greg Power's, have perfect speling.

Valueman - no capitulation! It's all looking great. Buy the Q. $80 in only 7 days! Sales going crazy. CDMA has won the mind war. People love some drama, worry and a scrap. The world has not ended yet, and although some would like to end it, they are not in the ascendant.

Dougjn, ooops, don't mistake thinking for pacifism. NZ is an independent place with a non-pacifist population, by and large. The USA naively mistakes antinuke laws as pacifism and adopts a bullying manner, which of course doesn't work very well at all. Developing a reputation as a neighbourhood bully won't work in the long run. Fortunately, Madeleine Albright has more brains than most of the people who have tried running the USA and she doesn't adopt such a tone. Who is the USA protecting NZ from? Not the French, who the USA turned a blind eye to when they conducted a terrorist operation here. If the USA wishes to protect us, we will be protected whether we like it or not. If they wish not to protect us, we will not be protected whether we like it or not. Protection rackets are a two-edged sword.

My point Dougjn was that collateral damage is not benignly accepted by those on the receiving end and one should be careful of retribution, tempting though it might be to just flatten the place where the baddies live.

And Limtex, the concept of 'success' in human affairs is somewhat squishy. Is it better to have a nervous collapse or be shot by a drugged out fatherless thug in your lovely new Cadillac, or live a life of relative poverty in a happier place? Maybe success could be measured by the total DNA pool in an area. Anyway, a society doesn't succeed, the individuals within it do or don't. Sure, the USA has the most nukes, the most GNP [though not per person], the most cars. Has it the most happiness? It has lots of Valium, Prozac, Viagra, Xenical, potions, Rolfing and some great golfing [from Fiji and Cablinasia]. But is your leader Clinton's life the ultimate success?

Okay, that's all the rant from me! Power freaks are everywhere and they aren't leaving town.
