Well, Bill, I don't think Newt Gingrich would be the very worst president in history. I have kind of a soft spot for him, because he likes to read a lot. But it is really hard to argue that a man who would finalize divorce discussions while his wife was coming out of anaesthesia after cancer surgery, and not pay child support so that his wife's church had to kick in, has basic character that is any better at all than Clinton's. He has already been censured by Congress though--publicly humiliated for financial shenanigans--so I guess he is further along on his learning/experience curve than the current president. I would like to point out, in all fairness, that the Clintons do not seem to be in politics purely for personal financial gain. In some ways they are both decidedly idealistic, even accounting for Mrs. Clinton's past adventures in the commodities markets. Maybe they wisely decided that they are under closer scrutiny now than they were in Arkansas, and have not decided to profit personally to the same degree. On the other hand, maybe the president's salary, being larger and everything, is enough for them to live on, since almost everything is provided free and they will both be able to make a lot of money after he leaves office, which will hopefully be sometime this month!!
