Well, I suppose that if you're dealing with languages which are incapable of dealing with data on a byte-by-byte level, and can't handle hexadecimal display, then perhaps you have a problem. Otherwise I'd just use BCD (1/1/1990 = 0x01 0x01 0x19 0x90) and not even bother worrying about ASCII or EBCDIC.

Then again, if your company's systems have as many compatibility issues as you imply, then I'd expect that Y2K is likely to be just another in an ongoing series of headaches you guys are in for.
