<<<<<<Re your remark about how many Americans know that Omaha Beach in at Normandy, France etc.-- couldn't this be explained by the fact that the importance of a liberal education(which includes history, social studies, etc) has been diminished in recent yrs?>>>

Well I take it when you say "liberal education" you are referring to liberal arts as we know them (history, social studies etc.) However, these classes were offered when I was a child and still are today. What I see lacking is what is being taught in them and the attitudes of many who are teaching them. I can't begin to go into the utter crap that I was presented in higher level education classes by teachers of these subjects. Garbage like the Revolutionary War was started because Sam Adams was ready to file bankruptcy and needed a distraction, the only hope for mankind is one world government, our moral fabric is destitute thanks to the second amendment to the Constitution and on and on and on. I have to think this sort of trash is trickling down to grammar school levels. The term "liberal education" is indicative of the types of politics disseminated rather than the types of subjects. Angela Davis is an icon...yeah right.

"Besides, only History buffs would find the antiquated language of Cooper's works interesting today."

Actually the pseudo-biblical language of Cooper's Indians much resembles the speech of certain space aliens in recent films, and when Pearl Buck wrote The Good Earth she used somewhat similar language to suggest a mythical connection of Chinese farmers with the soil.

But back to the main issues here: I just want to applaud your level-headedness and your willingness to see things from different sides--even to abandon what some people would assume to the natural prejudices of party, gender, generation, or economic class in order to arrive at a reasonable point of view.
