<<As a specialty supplier, Ciena was restricted partly by its lack of complementary network products.>>

Robert, I think this is a key here. It was also mentioned in Ciena's conference call yesterday, that the lack of an OC-192 interface to Ciena's gear may have been a factor in T's decision to back away from them.

MRVC, unlike CIEN, has a full line of networking products, and soon to be announced Optical capable products too. They have also said that in addition to GE, they will have both OC-48 AND OC-192 interfaces to their gear early next year, plus a terabit router - all integrated with their dynamic DWDM technology (which no one else has).

This is all fine for the enterprise market, but they may need higher density DWDM than the 8 wavelength system they mentioned in the CC. When you look at their total product offerings, I think many CLECs will be very interested at the 8 or 16 levels. I don't think they are targeting the major carriers for now, so I don't think they need to have a 40+ level system for awhile.

Back on the Ciena topic, the timing, coming on the morning of the TLAB and CIEN shareholder's meetings, was suspicious too. I wonder if a lawsuit for tampering may come out of this whole mess - especially if the merger falls through. I can think of a number of players, some that maybe don't want to see TLAB merge with CIEN, or maybe who want CIEN for themselves, and some that want T's business for themselves. Then there is the mysterious "company A", referred to in the CIEN 10-Q, who may have also bid for CIEN. Let's see, what big Telecommunications companys start with "A"? It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks and months.
