Atmel Receives Dolby Certification
for Multi-Channel Digital Decoder

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML - news)
announced today its certification from Dolby Laboratories for a single-chip Dolby(R) Digital
AC-3(R) 5.1 channel audio decoder to support Dolby Digital surround applications. The certified
audio-processing chip is Atmel's first multi-channel digital decoder in a series of planned
multimedia products out of Atmel's newly acquired Multimedia & Communications business unit.

Richard Bisset, Product Marketing Director for Atmel Multimedia & Communications states, ''It
is very exciting to have received this certification from Dolby Laboratories. This first chip was
designed as a core to be used for Dolby certification. Parallel to this effort, Atmel has been
working very closely with customers to define features and requirements that will be added as
peripherals to this core. To allow these customers and other high-volume potential customers to
evaluate the performance and audio quality of our Dolby Digital decoder, we have made available
a complete PC-based development system for this part.''

Atmel's complete digital decoder, the AT76C2XX, is expected to be introduced later in 1998
and will be based on the certified Dolby Digital decoder core that uses a high-performance 24-bit
DSP with architecture optimized for high-quality audio data. The device will integrate all the
program code and data memory required onto a single chip, eliminating the need for external
SRAM and therefore minimizing system costs.

Founded in 1984, Atmel Corporation is headquartered in San Jose, California with principal
manufacturing facilities in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Nantes and Rousset, France and
Heilbronn, Germany. Atmel designs, develops, manufactures and markets on a worldwide basis

PC Magazine just printed its yearly list of the 100 'most influential companies'....in the pc field. Atmel, Altera, LSI, Readrite....many familiar names not there. But there were some I'd neveeeeeeeeer heard of. And S3 was, like, 57th! So I sent a note (I was brought up to write notes and letters, not 'posts') to PC Magazine asking if it was like the car mags...the more you pay, the higher your rating........
