BONN, Germany (AP) -- German electronics company Siemens wants to join
forces in mobile telephone production with U.S. rival Motorola, a newspaper
said Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sony Corp. is considering giving up its cooperation with Siemens
in mobile phone development, another report said.

Siemens couldn't be reached for comment. The company announced major
plans to improve profitability in April.

The newspaper Welt am Sonntag said Siemens is losing money in mobile
phone production and that bringing its two factories into a joint venture with
Motorola's six would cut development costs and raise sales.

Currently, Siemens provides design and technology for Sony mobile phones
for the European market, Der Spiegel magazine said.

Now, with its own research and development center nearing completion in
Germany and a factory in France, Sony thinks it can stand on its own feet,
the magazine said.
