Every time I have done the math in the past it ended up costing more to build a system than to buy a pre-configured system. I assume the big box makers buy components in such large volume they can easily beat the price of the do it yourself person. Therefore in my opinion there has to be other reason besides cost to build your own PC. Say reasons like getting a particular component or combination of components or avoiding proprietary designs that are exceedingly difficult or impossible to upgrade.
