I'll try to answer both your requests in this one post.

As I stated previously, even with the ability to get some components wholesale, the savings are minimal, say in the $1-300 range, depending on the processor you get.

As an aside, SAG makes great systems, using SuperMicro mobos, and quality components throughout. You can't go wrong with them.

You're right, I don't think a dual is needed. What I find the most important for daytrading is a ton of good quality RAM. Any streaming data feed grabs an enormous amount of physical memory. In addition, you need a large swapfile, (or pagefile in NT) as VM is used extensively also. If you feel you may want to go dual later on, you can always get the dual mobo, with just one processor, and add the other in the future. However, time may erode the value in doing that, as the next mobo chipset will then be the standard, i.e., BX, GX, etc.

No experience with the Cheetah, though I have heard what you have heard. I have heard good things about the IBM 10,000 RPM, (I don't know the model number) including knowing a few people who have one.

Hope this helps.

Len

Also, is the noise level as bad as some say for the new 10,000 rpm Seagate Cheetah drives?

I heard one the other day for the first time myself after hearing about the noise and ITS LOUD!!! I couldn't sleep in a room with just one of these running....

>> Len, I take it then you consider a dual P2 machine not necessary for day trading, say, with MBT?<<

Out of all of the posts I have read on SI about the type of computers people use for day trading I have never seen anybody say a dual CPU computer is required. However, if you get a dual CPU computer you must use Win NT to gain any benefits from a dual CPU computer. Windows 95 or 98 doesn't know how to use a second CPU.
