C-Cube and DiviCom Working with Pioneer and CANAL+ on Digital Cable Systems for
the US Market

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

Milpitas, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 1998--C-Cube
Microsystems (Nasdaq: CUBE), the leading provider of digital video
silicon solutions, and DiviCom, a leading provider of compression
systems for digital television, today announced a strategic alliance
with Pioneer Electronics Corporation and CANAL+ to create an
interoperable digital system solution for the US cable television
industry. This alliance strengthens both C-Cube and DiviCom's position
in addressing the digital cable opportunity in the US.
Under the terms of this alliance, the parties intend to develop
an end-to-end digital system solution that will comply with the
OpenCable standards and will help to form the standards for software
and applications interoperability. Based on CANAL+ technology, the
system will support advanced digital video and interactive television
applications, such as interactive program guides, Internet browsing,
video-on-demand, home banking, online shopping and data download
capabilities.
C-Cube's silicon-based set-top technology for advanced set-top
applications will be used to develop an OpenCable compliant digital
set-top box that supports this high level of consumer entertainment
functionality. C-Cube will provide Pioneer with a complete evaluation
board, which includes an integrated MPEG-2 audio/video decoder and a
high-performance graphics system for the development of this set-top
box. C-Cube's set-top technology is already being deployed worldwide
today for digital cable, DTH, MMDS and xDSL digital network services.
CANAL+ will adapt MEDIAHIGHWAY software and MEDIAGUARD
conditional access systems to the US market to drive set-top
application development. CANAL+ is already delivering more than 30
interactive television applications for European digital services,
including tele-shopping, tele-banking, electronic program guides
(EPGs) and interactive advertising. CANAL+'s proven experience in
delivering these types of applications, strengthens the ability of
this alliance to provide truly interactive services to consumers.
DiviCom will supply the digital head-end equipment necessary for
the deployment of OpenCable compliant systems. DiviCom's head-end
equipment will include MediaView(TM) MPEG-2 encoders, MPEG-2
multiplexers and THESYS(TM) network management systems. DiviCom's
unmatched experience in working with diverse network architectures and
conditional access technologies has enabled the company to become one
of the industry's top providers of digital broadcast equipment for
digital video network services worldwide.
Pioneer has been active in the US cable market since the late
1970's when it developed the world's first interactive cable
television system with Warner Communications. Since then, Pioneer has
developed a complete line of one-way and two-way addressable
converters and control systems and achieved solid market penetration
in US cable. Pioneer will market this new Open-Cable compliant
end-to-end system through Pioneer's Industrial Sales and Marketing
Company, Pioneer New Media Technologies, Inc.
OpenCable is an effort under Cable Labs, the consortium of cable
companies, to define the standards that will support digital cable
systems with an open design and well-defined specifications to allow
interoperability and promote competition among system suppliers.
