Lee, Bottom Line realize that Abubakr was appointed President by a back room gathering of military leaders. He has the power of the military behind him, but absolutely no mandate from the people....He's trying to retain the military's grip on power in Nigeria. (BTW that tribe's name is the Fulani. The Fulani are a small tribal group, 97% Muslim, roughly from NE Nigeria, and represent a disproportionate number of top Government officials). IMHO, Abubakr is trying to avoid having to have elections. The simple reason is numbers. The Yoruba are the largest ethnic minority in the Country, comprising about 37% of the total population. if any sort of fair election is held, then a Yoruba will be elected President. And the military will go back to the barracks, and have to give up that multibillion $$ personal slush fund. Appointing a few token Yoruba and Ibo I doubt will satisfy the southerners. Indeed the Ibo are becoming quite restless... As to the northerners walking quietly away from the presidency I'll quote from the Sunday Concord, April 13, 1997 edition as to how one Hausa-Fulani, Mohammed Adamu feels about the ethnic majority southerners in his country- "We the Hausa-Fulani are chosen specially by God to rule. No apologies to the Yoruba, no apologies to the Igbos. And thank goodness the minorities are not in doubt about this matter. All the same no apologies to them either. Our mandate to rule this country derives from the "tacit approval" of God. That is not to say our claim lacks scriptural backing anyway, "So the earlier the Igbos, the Yorubas, and the madding minorities come to terms with this ethereal reality, the better for this country. As for us we swear by the Mount of Sinai and we swear by the Sea of Galilee that we will not shirk (sic) from our God-given responsibility. We will kill, we will maim, and we will banish any people who dare to stand between us and this covenant. Forget about the rotational presidency. That is bullshit. We are the medium through which God's kingdom on this side of earth shall come to pass." Sound like guys who will give up the Presidency voluntarily? mm, I think not.... Do you want to hear more sordid details about current Nigerian society and politics under the wonderful military government? Also do you realize that the Nigerian crisis is taking place against the backdrop of tremendous cultural and economic change in Africa, powered by very dynamic men such as Museveni in Uganda and Afwerki in Eritrea? Do you know what the links are between the savage Civil War in the Sudan between the Arab Muslims and African Christians and the crisis in Nigeria? Good news is that long term these events as they currently appear to be playing out will lead likely to increasing economic activity in Africa..... E ja ka fi'mo sokan 'Tori lle baba wa Lati tun se Lati gbe ga Fun 'losiwaju rere... (Yoruba for: In unity let's stand, On behalf of our fatherland To rebuild it To reform it For the betterment of all.....) Sincerely, Doug F.
