RE:" On the Economy of Terrorism: Tomahawk vs TruckBomb "

...gleaned from CNN's WebSite :

Tomahawk Cruise Missles

DESCRIPTION: These ship-launched missiles can carry a 1,000-pound warhead some 1,000 miles. There are more than 250 cruise missiles currently on ships in the Persian Gulf.

TRUCK-BOMBS: These stealthy vehicles can carry a 2,200-pound warhead. Range is limited only by the logistics of TruckStops. There are more than 25 million trucks currently in hot-spots around the world.

The unmanned cruise missile is the weapon of choice for highly
defended fixed targets. During the Persian Gulf War, some 300 were fired at Iraq.

TRUCK-BOMBS: The manned TruckBomb is the weapon of choice by foreign terrorists and domestic malcontents. In recent history, TruckBombs have wrought havoc in Lebanon, Israel, Ireland, Africa, Yugoslavia, New York City and the American heartland.

The missiles travel at 550 mph. Older versions have a range of 700
miles, carry a steel-encased warhead and cost about $1 million each. Newer versions have a range of 1000 miles, carry a titanium-encased warhead with a delayed fuse for penetration of reinforced targets and cost $750,000 each.

TRUCK-BOMBS: Travel at 55 mph, use a fertilizer + fuel-oil explosive, often amplified by strapping LP-gas tanks to the 55-gallon oil-drum containers, to create a fireball effect; often accompanied by roofing nails to provide anti-personnel shrapnel, and a 2cm steel plate on the truck-bed and/or truck walls to direct blasts; and cost about $7,500.

ANYTHING NEW? The newest version of the Tomahawk (the block 3) is guided by global positioning satellites (GPS). Older versions used maps stored in the missile's computer memory. The GPS-guided missiles do not need recognizable terrain features to navigate, they can be targeted much faster, and they are more accurate.

TRUCK-BOMBS: Guided by interstate highway and urban roadways stored in the driver's memory, often using (GSM) cellular phones to circumvent security measures. When the driver is willing to give his life to achieve his objectives - virtually indefensible in any environment.
