Hi Frank:

I do not think that the sophistication of the
Gigabit Ethernet over copper chips will necessarily
translate in very high costs. The dynamics which
ultimately drove down the price of fast Ethernet ports
(larger volumes, more competition) should ultimately
prevail, except that after the leaders hit the market
(BRCM, LEVL, LU), it will take more time for other
competitors to develop working chips. So, the prices
may remain firm for a longer period of time. Note
that these are only guesses, since I am really not an
expert on chip economics.
