Vietnamese Cops Crack Medicine Ring
Monday August 24 9:56 AM EDT

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - Police in southern Vietnam confirmed reports today that they have cracked a ring producing counterfeit medicines, including the anti-impotence drug Viagra.

Six people were arrested Aug. 16, when police confiscated 1,000 fake Viagra tablets, 10,000 counterfeit Viagra logos and 25,000 sham logos of other medicines that are supposed to improve sexual performance, the Labor newspaper reported today.

The ring was uncovered when police in Long An province on July 17 intercepted Pham Van Luy and seized 25,000 tablets of Glifanan, banned by the Health Ministry since 1992, as Luy was to sell them to Cambodian dealers, police said.

Luy's reported confession led to the Aug. 11 arrest of Le Quang Minh, who allegedly sold him the banned medicine. Minh's subsequent confession led to the arrests of his six associates.

Minh allegedly told police that they had sold about a ton of fake medicine to Cambodians.

The Health Ministry has yet to allow the use of Viagra in Vietnam, although it is available at inflated prices, mainly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
