thread

Most all the ag biotechs are up at the open today. The announcement by Monsanto that they have located the gene for an insecticide toxic to the corn rootworm may be what is driving the interest. This could be big if it works well (the reported efficacy was very high). This is the case because the corn rootworm market is the largest for any insect in the US, and it also indicates that the possibilities for using biotech for replacing toxic insecticides in many different markets.

The effects on ABTX may be indirect since not many insecticides are used on forages or turf grasses. However, it indicates to Dupont, Agrevo, Novartis, Dow, etc. the future is biotech, and they should find quality seed company partners.

Jerry

It seems to me that the negative Street perception of this stock must be correlated to the grains supply/demand dynamic, which is dismal at best. Grain prices and feeder cattle prices are plunging, so why would anyone want to buy a company that sells alfalfa seeds? I'm looking for a reason to go long, but with the CRB breaking 200 today, I think it's still too early. Check out a chart of feeder cattle or wheat and look how they bounced at the same time that ABTX went from 15 to 21 two weeks ago. We did get a nice rally in the stock market at that time, but the relationship should not be ignored. How come nobody on this thread talks about commodity prices? Am I off the track? Regards
