For once in our lives, Newt and I were reading from the same page.

Could be for different reasons, though. Perhaps Newt is not calling for impeachment proceedings because:

1. There are plenty of other prominent politicians already doing that;

2. He himself is a high-profile target and is likely to attract more criticism if he does call for impeachment;

3. He'd rather deal with a weakened Clinton than with Gore for the next 18 months (the devil you know, etc.);

4. He knows that Starr's report will be the lever needed to remove Clinton from office, and to start the process prematurely would be counterproductive;

5. It makes him seem like a nicer and fairer guy;

6. He just wants to savor the moment.

Seems to me that if your political enemy is in a world of hurt, you can do two things: you can kick him while he's down (runs the risk of making you look like a bad guy) or you can stand aside and watch him struggle (saves energy and deflects attention away from you).

The difference between Newt and you is that he doesn't really believe all that, it is just the "politically correct" thing to say at this time.

<<<Of all the things to disagree with me about, it's over "bugger"? Okay, Dug, you can have that one. As for your attacks on my character, I don't think that's fair. If you notice, the only people I try to flame are those who have called me stupid, a liar, or -informed--accusations which are especially goading from people like jlallen or Bob Churchill who without fail posts inaccurate information when attacking me.>>>

Why you 'ol "bugger" how benevolent of you to give him his due after he has joined me in administering the cyber paddling you so richly deserve. Just remember I entered this conversation by pointing out the ridiculousness of someone asking for an apology while insulting the very person he wanted an apology from. It was you who used the word "bugger" in reply and then claimed to know what the word meant even though it's obvious you haven't a clue. You should be thankful. Without our help you might have gone to England some day and exclaimed to a "bobby", "top o' the morning ol' bugger".

<<<I note for the record that despite all of the ad hominem attacks on me, Newt Gingrich gave a speech yesterday which basically confirmed
virtually all my views of the Lewinsky case that I have posted and been attacked for: He said it wasn't enough by itself to justify impeachment; he said impeachment wastes a huge amount of energy of the public; he said that the GOP was at a disadvantage over spin control because of grand jury confidentiality; he said the House would likely stretch the process out to next year; etc. etc. >>>

Unfortunately, you're exuberance will be short-lived. Any politician can gain instant approval points by saying the President won't be impeached IF the Starr report is only about sex. I am sure Mr. Gingrich will appreciate your support at least for the short term. However, I suspect you won't be standing next to him when the report comes out. Let me give you the code for "we won't impeach if it's only about sex." What it really means in politicalese is "when the report comes in these sex things are icing on the cake."
