The convergence is happening - the technologies are already being put into place.

There are a couple of major areas that LU and NT play in that CISCO cannot - phones, phone switches and cellular infrastructure. HOWEVER, the big growth is in the networking equipment that ties all of that together, and with the advances we are seeing, direct mapping of voice (via IP) over SONET is a reality. And, I think CISCO will be a player in that arena.

Yes, it is all digital, and yes, it will be an all-out war. The stakes are huge as companies rush to make everything connect to everything at the highest possible bit rates.

CSCO and LU are both after the future telecom networks, but as of today nether has the capability to do the whole job themselves. It's my guess that they can avoid a lot of head on competition for quite a while, because the phone companies will not want to be captive so will use both. On one side is the LU advantage that it is a vastly bigger company than CSCO . and on the other side is CSCO's greater experience in data based networks. I think both will do OK, but the smaller size of CSCO means that a billion dollars worth of new business will have a bigger impact on the bottom line. I own CSCO but not LU for that reason.
