Scott,
Hi!! <<You are right on target. The ability to attract, motivate, and retain key people is essential to out-distance the competition. DELL realizes this and I would bet that they are able to retain and motivate their employees much more effectively than their older and more tired competitors. My generation would prefer to work for DELL any day of the week. It is "the hot company" in the industry. They have attracted a lot of bright people and their stock options pay off in a much bigger way than their competitor's stock options.>>

That was excellent....attracting not only the business but the work horses to do the job....the best horses that is....flying down on the plane to the shareholders Drew, Frank and I ran into a guy in the airport...our conversation continued on the plane...quickly ....he was a top young executive from SONY....looking forward to an interview with Dell...told us it was an easy decision to make if they offered him the position...

People will always make things great....people are why things get messed up also....Michael Dell has created great great great things with great people...it's that simple!.....Right Chuzzlewit??

Best, kemble

Scott, you and Kemble have touched on a very central aspect of DELL's success. Beyond the model, there is a deeply entrenched culture within DELL that has the ability to sustain the company for a very long time, even without proper tweaking (from time to time).

I'd like to take it a step further and point out, too, that DELL's management is not just one man. It is a core group of very talented managers.

I read a good description of the relationship between Mort Topfer and Michael Dell. The analogy was that Mort acted as the trunk to Michael's tree of ideas.

Michael remains a techo-savvy entrepreneur, and Mort (along with Kevin Rollins) brings Michael's ideas and vision to fruition.

Regards,

LoD
