How do you figure this?.... I was under the impression he was sort of a financial genius (or minimally very savvy regarding corporate financials)?

There is no one person responsible for the success of Dell. Meredith placed a spotlight on Return of Invested Capital which gives Dell it's incredible cash flow. If there is one trait that is shared by the management it is that they recognize a good thing when they see it. Many ideas have been tried, there were many executives with ego or turf problems a few years ago. They are gone, those who's ideas work and don't go around stomping on other good ideas remain. The result is the Dell of today.
