I am long both TLAB and CIEN, and I would not support taking a reduced ratio for CIEN. This has WCOM/MCI/BT/GTE written all over it. TLAB will try to negotiate, CIEN will walk, and CSCO or some other company that appreciates CIEN's technology edge will come in. If a bidding war ensues, CIEN shareholders may wind up with even a better deal than TLAB was offering to begin with. MCI is far better off today with WCOM than it was with BT. That's not to say that TLAB will do poorly on its own. Birck has several years of astronomical growth to go before he really has to worry about where TLAB's future lies.
