Hi Paul,

I can share an anecdote. A few years ago, right after the Mexican currency crisis, I visited Mexico with an Hispanic friend. We staid with his relatives in Leon where I had the opportunity to speak with his family.

One of his cousins worked for the government, gathering economic statistics. I asked him whether the government ever fudged the results. His answer was "sometimes, for policy reasons."

I also learned that the wealthier members of the (extended) family had foreseen the devaluation and exchanged most of their liquid assets to dollars long (~6 months) before the devaluation.

I would guess that China isn't much different . . .

Best regards, John.
