For the first time I'm beginning to lose some faith in this company.

This press release is like Merck announcing that they can make drugs.

Air-sensitive moisture sensitive,Whoopie! NO BIG DEAL. EVERYBODY DOES IT, AND HIGH THROUGHPUT TOO.

Which leads me to a sad conclusion:

Either,

They have really sucky chemists who think they need to make a big deal about this,

OR

This press release is clearly about HYPE and not about what they can do, which is make alot of drug like compounds in partnership with people who are supposed to know what they are looking for.

As far as the insinuations that they'll be making Taxol derivitatives by the thousands, I'll believe it when I see it. The hallmark of combinatorial chemistry is high yielding broadly applicable chemistry that draws upon a large number of commercially available building blocks. 50 step syntheses that generate a 2% yield of final product do not apply. In addition, the rate limiting step in making libraries of these type of compounds getting those type of reactions to work in a broad sense, which is a different world from 'Natural Product' synthesis where the difficult and challenging task is getting specific reactions to yield specific stereochemical structure in an acceptable yield and purity. Same tools, two different extremes.

Very grumpy IMO. Also noticed that the Rumor Mill suggest that the company is in disarray.

Hope this doesn't continue.

Now they need products not methods.
I saw the press release. Imagine Boeing announcing that their air crafts have wings. Not very exciting, is it.
I'm waiting for the one announcing that they have discovered a drug candidate for an important disease and it works in animal models, and they can publish it in a respected medical journal. Everything else is BS. There is no medical need for another taxol.
