OK, I'll stop.

I know one starts with an M and the other a P.

TOSHIBA Corp together with local distributor Tele Dynamics Sdn Bhd unveiled last week seven new notebook computers from the Toshiba Satellite, Tecra and Portege range.

The new notebooks - the Satellite 2500CDS and 4000 series, the Tecra 8000 series and the Portege 7000CT - are designed to incorporate mainstream features with industry standard-setting value, according to Toshiba.

Toshiba Singapore's computer system department senior manager for regional marketing Wu Tengguo said all the new models are powered by the latest Intel notebook processor and weigh no more than 3.1 kilograms (kg) each with the battery included.

The Satellite Satellite 2500CDS together with the Satellite 4000CDT and 4000CDS are designed with an all-in-one concept and are targeted at small businesses or consultants, he added.

"These models are categorised as best value notebooks as they are affordable," Wu said.

Weighing 3kg, the Satellite 2500CDS is based on the Pentium MMX 233 megahertz (MHz) processor and comes with 32-megabyte (MB) extended data out (EDO) dynamic random access memory (DRAM), 12.1-inch dual scan twist nematic (DSTN) with 800 by 600 resolution screen, 2.02-gigabyte (GB) hard disk and 20X CD-ROM, and comes pre-installed with Windows 98.

Its standard lithium-ion battery provides up to 3.2 hours of battery life.

The Satellite 4000 models are the first in the series to incorporate Pentium II processor. A Satellite 4000 notebook starts with a 233MHz processor, 32MB synchronous DRAM (SDRAM), 12.1-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) or DSTN 800 by 600 resolution monitor, up to 3.5 hours of battery life with DMI and ACPI power management and comes pre-installed with either Windows 95 or 98.

All Satellite models are covered with a one-year worldwide warranty

The Tecra 8000 series comes with three different offerings - the L, N and P models. With a variety of configurations, this series is designed for the needs of users in the corporate and enterprise markets.

Lighter than the Satellite series, these notebooks are able to deliver lower total cost of ownership as most of its peripherals are interchangeable, Toshiba said.

The Model L is powered by a Pentium II 233MHz processor and comes with 32MB SDRAM, 3.8GB hard disk, 24X CD-ROM and 12.1-inch TFT 800 by 600 monitor. The Model N is based on the Pentium II 266MHz and incorporates 64MB SDRAM memory, 5.9GB hard disk, 24X CD-ROM and 13.3-inch TFT 1,024 by 768 resolution with 16.7 million colours depth screen.

Another notebook, the Model P, has almost the same bundling as the Model N except for its higher capacity hard disk drive which is 7.63GB. It comes with a digital versatile disk (DVD)-ROM drive and bigger screen size - 14.1-inch TFT 1,024 by 768 with 16.7 million colours depth.

The Portege 7000CT is Toshiba's lightest and slimmest notebook. Featuring a new make-up with grey casing, the ultra-portable notebook shares the same size as other Toshiba notebooks.

The notebook is boosted by a Pentium II 266MHz processor and comes with 32MB SDRAM, 12.1-inch TFT 800 by 600 screen, 4.12GB hard disk, built-in motion picture experts group ( MPEG )-II decoding capabilities, more than 2.9 hours of battery life, Windows 95/98, and three-year worldwide warranty for parts and labour.

The Portege 7000CT offers two 1.2kg docking stations - 10/100 Network/CD Dock and 10/100 Network/DVD Dock which includes 24X CD-ROM drive and DVD respectively.

Other features integrated into the docking station are 10/100 Ethernet network adapter, floppy disk drive, two stereo sound speakers and acoustic chamber, TV out port, two universal serial bus (USB) ports and expansion slots.

Other similarities shared by all models include 32 kilobytes of internal cache and 512KB level two (L2) cache, memory expandable to 160MB, 2MB of EDO video RAM (VRAM), PCI 2.1 and card bus, USB, four megabits per second (Mbps) FIR-compliant for infra-red, lithium-ion battery and 16-bit stereo sound system.

"Satellite and Tecra volume shipments will start this month while the Portege is expected to ship next month," Wu told reporters at the product launch last week.
